Hike, Maple Town, Talons and Tailfeathers
at Mountsberg Conservation Area

Your LAST chance to visit the Sugar Bush this Spring, and your first chance to see a show with Mountsberg’s Birds of Prey!

We’re excited to invite you to celebrate the last day of the sweetest time of year at Mountsberg Conservation Area. Join us for the end of their Maple Town Festival and see a show with their birds of prey at Talons and Tailfeathers included in this trip.

This trip features a morning guided hike with a stop for lunch, a 45 minute Birds of Prey session, and 3 hours of exploring Maple Town and the rest of the sites at your own pace to round out the day.

We will start the day with hiking and exploring the areas trails and will take a break to each lunch. The park offers various difficult trails including wheelchair accessible to strenuous in difficulty, hikers of all ages and skill levels will find a trail to suit their needs.

After a few hours of hiking, you can explore the last day of delicious activities at the Maple Town Festival. At 2:30** we will head to the Mountsberg Raptor Centre for a Talons and Tailfeathers demonstration.

At Maple Town, staff will offer park visitors exploration of the various demonstrations and exhibits around the sugar bush- and of course, don't forget the pancakes!

**Please note, each birds of prey time slot has a maximum of 30 people, if we have a full bus we will split the group up into two showings, to be determined closer to trip day.

  • Maple Town

  • Raptor Centre with 2:30 demonstration of Talons and Tailfeathers

  • Cameron Barn

  • Candy Cabin: Watch our educators whip up a batch of delicious maple sugar on the woodstove and try a free sample of this tasty treat!

  • Sugar Shack: The Sugar Shack is where the maple magic happens. Watch our skilled sugar makers turn watery maple sap into sticky sweet maple syrup in the evaporator. Our educators lead formal presentations every twenty minutes.

  • Historical Sites: From the first Indigenous sugar makers to pioneer cast iron kettles to the flat pan, this area takes you through the changing technology used to make maple magic over the years.

  • Country Store: Pick up a bottle of maple syrup or some maple candies to take home and enjoy!

  • Maple Trivia Trail: Take a stroll through the sugar bush and pick up some maple trivia as you check out the 150-year-old maple trees and watch the sap drip into the pails.

  • Country Store Gift Shop Wagon Rides from 10am-2:30pm (additional fee applies, available first come, first serve. Sign up at the Discovery Centre)

  • Maple Taffy on Snow (additional fee applies)

  • Pancake House (additional fees apply): What’s maple season without a piping hot stack of pancakes covered in maple syrup! Pick up yours in the pancake house!

DAY SCHEDULE 

9:00am - Pick-up at 34 Asquith ave. (near Yonge and Bloor subway station)

10:15am - Arrive at Mountsberg Conservation Area

10:30- 12:30pm - Guided hike with ActiveDays staff, with lunch trailside. Check out some of the beautiful forests of the area. Get up close and personal with birds, nerd out about plants and just get active with community.

12:30- 2:15pm - Self guided exploration at the Maple Syrup Festival and conservation area

2:30-3:15pm - Talons and Tailfeathers demonstration

3:30-4:15pm Self guided exploration.

4:30pm - Depart for Toronto.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Lunch! If you can, bring something warm- This helps a lot in staying warm on a cold day

  • Tea (optional but, again, a great way to keep warm)

  • Winter boots / Hat / Scarf / Mitts

  • Ice grips or ice cleats (must have if icy conditions), or hiking boots, treaded shoes for muddy conditions

  • Water (at least 1.5L)

  • Medications

  • Weather appropriate clothing- Layer up!- wool is great as a middle layer as it helps wick water away from the body and keep you warm!

  • Camera

  • Whatever else you need to have fun on the trail :)

  • Footwear: Please wear boots/shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy AND that will keep you warm.


WHAT TO EXPECT WITH ACTIVEDAYS

To us, facilitating this event is about creating an environment that you can engage with in your own way. This is your experience and everyone has their own relationship with the outdoors and their bodies. We want to meet you where you are at — you can take part in the hike, or wander off on your own adventure.

ActiveDays is also a community. This is an inclusive space to meet new people, share stories and have fun! To us, there is no better place to get to know someone than the outdoors. We all share a desire to get out, explore and move.
