Seeding and Staking
Conservation day at Brighton Wetlands
sunday november 24
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
~The Lorax
As a Nature Lover you probably have some big appreciation for all the great things nature does for us! ActiveDays is excited to announce a fun day of ‘giving back’ in collaboration with the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Conservation Volunteer program as a way to return the favour.
What? Join Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) staff to restore a retired farm field into a native meadow and forest. We will be using a combination of hand seeding and live staking, a technique where tree and shrub cuttings are planted directly into the ground, to introduce a variety of native species into the landscape. Participants will also go on a 1-kilometre walking tour of the Brighton Constructed Wetlands and learn about the restoration process and wetland species. Physical activity will include walking approximately two and a half kilometres over uneven and muddy terrain, bending, hammering and carrying equipment.
This event will proceed in most weather conditions, so please dress accordingly. The event may be cancelled if there is heavy rain in the forecast or if conditions on the ground are not suitable for planting. You will be contacted should we need to cancel the event.
Please pack a lunch and snacks that can be eaten outdoors, a refillable water bottle, and a travel mug or thermos for hot beverages. There are no stores to purchase food or beverages within walking distance of the work site. Extra snacks, water and hot beverages will be provided.
Who is the Nature Conservancy of Canada? The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the country’s unifying force for nature, working to deliver large-scale, permanent land conservation. Since 1962, NCC, Canada’s leading not-for-profit, private land conservation organization, has been protecting Ontario’s most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Along with its partners, NCC has helped to protect more than 243,000 hectares in Ontario. From the north shore of Lake Superior to Pelee Island in Lake Erie, NCC works to protect the province’s most significant natural landscapes.
About Brighton Wetlands
On the shores of Presqu’ile Bay, in the picturesque town of Brighton, lies 2.5 kilometres of undeveloped Lake Ontario shoreline and 94 hectares of coastal wetland habitat. Known as the Brighton Wetland, this special natural gem is one of the last of its kind. Development, recreation and other human activities have altered much of the lake’s shorelines, wetlands and beaches. To find an area still intact is rare. Brighton Wetlands was acquired by NCC and Ducks Unlimited Canada in 2018 and together we are working on restoring this area from agriculture to wetland, meadow and forest. Learn more about the area here.
NOTE: Participants must be 14 years or older

We want to meet you where you are at — you can take part in the experience in the way that feels best for your body.
Active Days is also a community. This is an inclusive space to meet new people, share stories and have fun! To us, there is no better place to get to know someone than the outdoors. We all share a desire to get out, explore and move.
